Earlier this summer, I was sitting in with [livejournal.com profile] rojagato in a half crowded theatre to see the debut of the MFA's kung-fu retrospective, Heroic Grace. One of the selling points for opening night was the live DJ soundtrack for the silent films Red Knight-Errant and Swordswoman of Huangjing. Hunger got the better of us after the first film, and as we bailed and walked down Huntington looking for dinner, I turned to her and said, "goddammit, I could've done a better job of soundtracking that film. Did the DJ even watch it before his set?"

and as I started to nitpick the details, [livejournal.com profile] rojagato just said to me, "you know, you guys should do your own silent movie thing."

So tonight is the culmination of that idea, and the test to see whether or not I'm going to eat my words.

this is really fucking cool.
i've seen the film a couple of times before--it will be great for ceremony.
what time are you showing it though? early is evil. i may be able to come around 11, after yoga.

ah, edited original post to indicate time. Unfortunately it's a 9-10 sort of thing, but I'll see about trying to get it recorded. Just can't remember if the DJ booth has a working tape deck that runs off the master. Last time we recorded something, Tony brought in a DAT deck and connected it directly to the sound board.

aww, dude, if I got this before I left for the club, I totally would've e-mailed you. As it is, I'm going to have to try to reconstitute the set on the PC (and this time do it without having the second deck skipping on me intermittently) and try recording a redubbed movie onto VHS (yay for non copy protected DVDs)

I predict that this particular project will be completed in 2023.

Is this a first-hour or prime-time event?

Good, cause I'm so about to be sick as hell, and should get some rest before really destroying myself on NYE, but I want silent movie goodness too!

Perhaps your memories were preoccupied by the random encounter we had at the Laughing Pig afterwards, but I remember getting the seed planted in my head that night and letting it take root the following evening when I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] photiq at River Gods.

Now that I think about it, it's interesting how the inspiration for these nights seem to require the presence of bars and Guinness.

Yeah, record this thing. I'm not back in town until Wednesday, but I still want to see/hear it.

'Twas neat. And it didn't deter certain folks from dancing either. :-P

I know it probably wasn't meant to be when they filmed it but I always find the over-dramatic acting in silent films hilarious.

Would it have fucking killed you to give a little advance notice for those of us that have to plan in advance to go to Ceremony when their friends do something this awesome?

You suck.

I was besieged by requests after the film was done ("Metropolis!" "dude, Metropolis is totally overdone ... Faust!" "Nosferatu!") so will be likely doing another silent movie night in the near future. If I do try it again, I will e-mail you personally.

btw, if it needs to be said, count me in for the screening of Cheerleader Ninjas.
